Which tools, skills, and goals to list (and why it matters)
Three fields on your Netch profile do most of the work when someone decides whether to swipe right on you: Goals, Tools, and Skills. This article explains what each field does, how it affects your visibility, and how to fill it in well.
Goals
Goals is a Basics field. It is required, and you must pick at least one before Discover unlocks.
It appears directly on your profile card, visible to other members before they swipe. It is the clearest signal of what you are on Netch to do.
Options:
- Share knowledge
- Find a mentor
- Just meet interesting people
- Explore new ideas
- Find collaborators
Pick every goal that genuinely applies to you right now. If you are open to mentoring but also want collaborators, pick both. There is no penalty for selecting multiple. The point is accuracy, not brevity.
When goals match between two people, there is an obvious reason to connect. When they don't, at least both parties know upfront.
Tools
Tools is a Stand Out field. It is optional.
It is a multi-select list covering design, development, product, marketing, analytics, sales, communications, and more.
Two things happen when you fill it in. Your card becomes more informative at a glance. And you start appearing when another member filters Discover by that tool.
If you leave Tools empty, you are invisible in any tool-filtered search. That is a meaningful reduction in discoverability, especially for professionals who specialize in specific platforms.
How to choose
List the tools you use regularly in your current role, or the ones you are known for. If a recruiter or colleague described your toolkit, what would they mention?
Don't list everything you have ever opened. A long, unfocused list signals less than a short, accurate one.
Skills
Skills is also a Stand Out field. It is optional.
The list covers broad professional skills: strategy, design, growth, sales, development, data, operations, leadership.
Same logic as Tools: filling in Skills makes you appear in skill-filtered searches. Leaving it empty removes you from those results entirely.
How to choose
Pick the skills that define your professional identity right now. If you work across several areas, that is fine. But prioritize what you lead with, not everything you can do.
Why all three matter together
Goals show intent. Tools and skills show context. Together, they let another member quickly answer: "Does this person share my direction, and do we have relevant overlap?"
A profile with all three filled in gives someone a concrete reason to swipe right. A profile missing all three asks the other person to take a leap of faith on your job title alone.
The effort is low. The signal value is high.
